Stathis Livathinos was born in Athens. He graduated from the Department of Theatre at the Russian Academy of Theater Art (GITIS) in 1990 with an M.A. in Theatre Direction with distinction and an M.F.A. in Theatre Acting. (Class: A. Goncharov).
He has collaborated with the most important theatres in Greece (National Theatre, Onassis Stegi, Athens and Epidaurus Festival, Athens Megaron, etc.) and has directed some of the most famous productions, most of them with his stable group of actors, such as Dostoevsky's Idiot, Shakespeare's Love Labours Lost, Timon of Athens and Homer's Iliad, whose tour received worldwide recognition. In 2017 he was invited at La Monnaie/De Munt to direct Verdi's Aida and in 2019 he directed Aeschylu’s Agamemnon at the National Theatre of China in collaboration with the National Theatre of Greece.
He received the Moscow Theatre Critics Award for his graduate production of Tom Stoppard’s* Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead*, the Young Creators Award from the Theatre Critics Association in 2000 for his direction of Kushner’s The Illusion, the Photos Politis Prize for his productions 2000-2002, the Critics Choice Award for Best Performance for Shakespeare's King Lear in 2009 and the Koun's Directing Award for Kornaro’s Erotokritos in 2011.
From 2001 to 2007 Stathis Livathinos was the Artistic Director of the Greek National Theatre’s Experimental Stage, where he launched an innovative educational venture with the founding of Greece’s first lab for theatre directing.
From 2015 to 2019 he was the Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Greece where he founded the first Theatre Directing Department.

Through festivals, exhibitions, exchanges, masterclasses, cooperation projects, the UTE help create a continuous flow between West and East, between generations, between tradition and innovation. Our celebration is inspired by this rich history. With the help of the Interferences International Theatre Festival, we wish to remember some of the best performances presented at past editions of the UTE festival and look forward to new horizons.
