Artistic director of the Teatro Nacional São João since February 2019. In 1994, he co-founded the Visões Úteis group, within which he began working as stage director. At the TNSJ, he staged Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening (2004), Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck (2005), and Vassily Sigarev’s Plasticine (2006). Already as its artistic director, he staged Danton’s Death, by Georg Büchner (2019), Castro, by António Ferreira, The Balcony, by Jean Genet (2020), Ghosts, by Henrik Ibsen, and Lear, after William Shakespeare (2021). From 1998 to 2003, he was artistic director of Auditório Nacional Carlos Alberto and, between 2003 and 2007, fulfilled the same role at Teatro Carlos Alberto, then already a part of the TNSJ structure. In 2001, he co-founded Ao Cabo Teatro, of which he was artistic director until 2018. For this company he staged many shows, with texts by such authors as Sophocles, Aeschylus, Racine, Molière, Chekhov, Ibsen, Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Sarah Kane, Lars Norén, Marius von Mayenburg, among many others. Platonov (2008) was elected the Best Play of the year by the leading reference daily newspaper Público, also winning an honourable mention by the Portuguese Association of Theatre Critics. Lars Norén’s Demons was awarded the SPA 2016 Authors Prize, in the category of Best Play.
