A translation project
Initiated by the Institut français de Serbie and the Jugoslovensko Dramsko Pozorište
Opening at the Jugoslovensko Dramsko Pozorište, Belgrade
In the context of the Festival Sterijino Pozorje
One the 31st May 2013
Initiated by the Institut français de Serbie and the Jugoslovensko Dramsko Pozorište, Trans Script is a translation project which aim to bring new French drama to Serbian audiences and create meaningful relationships between French and Serbian theatre professionals. Trans Script is focusing on the most exciting new voices of French theatre. After a long and thorough process of reading and selection, 5 plays have been chosen for translation, public reading and publication: Hymen by Lucie Depauw, George Kaplan by Frédéric Sonntag, Identité by Gérard Watkins, Tout mon Amour by Laurent Mauvignier and Le Système de Ponzi by David Lescot.
Trans Script is about discovery, collaboration and exchange. What makes it different from other projects is the fact that each play is translated through a collaborative process involving three persons : the French author and two Serbian professionals, either translators, playwrights or dramaturgs. In Belgrade in February, Frédéric Sonntag worked with Jovana Papovic and Ugljesa Sajtinac; Lucie Depauw worked with Iva Brdar and Tanja Sljivar, while Andjelka Nikolic and Marija Karaklajic had long conversations with Gérard Watkins. Tiana Krivokapic produced her translation following regular exchanges with both Laurent Mauvignier and Milos Kreckovic and David Lescot gave valuable input to Iva Brdar and Jovana Papovic's work.
The project will open on the 31st of May at the Festival Sterijino Pozorje with the public reading of Frédéric Sonntag's play George Kaplan directed by Žanko Tomić. The public reading will be followed by a public discussion, on the theme: "Translating theatre, translating cultures?".
Participants in the discussion will be:
- Frédéric SONNTAG (playwright),
- Philippe LE MOINE (French cultural attaché),
- Dominique DOLMIEU (artistic director of the Maison d’Europe et d’Orient in Paris),
- Milos KRECKOVIC (dramaturg Jugoslovensko Dramsko Pozoriste)
- Igor BOJOVIC (selector Sterijino Pozorje).
