The Own & the Foreign

Stress test for open society

The dramatic increase in refugees coming to Europe and the global threat of anti-Western terror groups are currently dominating public and private discourse. The German Chancellor’s optimistic approach of “we can do it” and a wave of helping hands meet worried concerns and expressions of rejection that don’t even shy away from violence.

More than ever do we have to think about how we want to live together in the future. Can we even still afford to have an open society characterised by right to freedom? When will defending this freedom become the opposite? What’s our definition of the own, and where does the foreign begin?

In the themed month of The Own & the Foreign the Schauspielhaus Bochum approached these questions throughout March and April. The German premiere of Anders Lustgarten’s Lampedusa was at its centre. The British author of American-Hungarian roots put this unstoppable migration wave into an over-all European context with the help of two stories. His furious, bitter and still hopeful two-character-play constituted one of the most powerful theatre texts about the possibly greatest challenge of our times. The world premiere took place in the summer of 2015 at the Soho Theatre in London. The German premiere was on 11 March in the Kammerspiele, directed by the Schauspielhaus’ head dramaturg, Olaf Kröck.

Another priority was the opening night on 9 April of Hermann Schmidt-Rahmer’s new project who based his new production on Elfride Jelinek’s heavyset work on the European refugee crisis Die Schutzbefohlenen (The Suppliants). The other three parts of the text bundle, Appendix, Coda and Epilogue on the ground — the latter was only developed in January 2016 and

was used as a stage version for the first time here — also formed part of the evening.

The Schauspielhaus Bochum also invited to an open discussion in the Kammerspiele as part of the state-wide initiative Open society on 13 March. In the context of the matinee for Lampedusa on 6 March, the Schauspielhaus invited to look into the situation of refugees on location. At the matinee for Die Schutzbefohlenen (The Suppliants) on 3 April, the Schauspielhaus tackled the worries, resentment, processes of defence, and the question of whether we’re facing a war of the worlds. The General Assembly concluded this themed month with international perspectives between 8 and 10 April.
