Ilan Ronen

President of the Union of European Theatres between November 2011 and November 2015, Ilan Ronen was appointed as artistic director at the Habima National Theatre of Israel in 2004, after occupying the same position at the Cameri Theatre in Tel Aviv (1984 – 1992) and at the Khan Theatre in Jerusalem (1975 – 1982). As a stage director, he has been particularly keen on staging authors that show a social and political consciousness, either classic or contemporary, from Eschyles to Shakespeare, from Brecht to Noren.

Moreover, Ilan Ronen is one of the founders of the Zavta Satirical Theatre (founded in 1977) with dramaturges Hillel Mitelpunkt and Joshua Sobol.

Ilan Ronen has deeply influenced Israeli theatre. His dedication to young actors, young authors and contemporary literature led him to found the Habima Young Company in Tel Aviv. Over the years (from 1996 to 2004), he worked with this young company on new and significant projects for which he was awarded several prizes.

Ilan Ronen’s repertoire includes classic and contemporary plays as well as international and Israeli productions. He has been invited to numerous European theatres, ‘exporting’ Habima productions, amongst others on the occasion of festivals, receiving laudatory reviews along the way.
