French actor, playwright and stage director Georges Lavaudant was born in Grenoble on 18 February 1947. In the 1960s, he participated in the creation of the Emmanuel Mounier Drama School in Grenoble, and in 1968 he joined the Partisan Theatre. Designated as director of the Alps’ National Center for Drama in 1981, he started gaining national recognition. Georges Lavaudant is now regarded as one of the most significant masters in visual theatre. The evocative power of his theatre relies on its visual and plastic impact. Some of the creations of this era are now considered as mythical, among which Palazzo Mentale (1976) by Pierre Bourgeade, with a mix of texts borrowed from Borges, Kafka, and Hölderlin.
In 1986, Roger Planchon asked Georges Lavaudant to collaborate with him at the direction of the People’s National Theatre in Villeurbanne. That same year, he directed The Balcony by Jean Genet in Mexico. His first encounter with Mexico left him shocked, and the country has been a great source of inspiration for him ever since. With the support of the same collaborators, Georges Lavaudant continued to explore and enlarge his repertory — Brecht, Chekhov, Labiche — and worked with numerous authors: Jean-Christophe Bailly, Michel Deutsch, Jean-Marie-Gustave Le Clézio.
In 1988, Georges Lavaudant got into writing and directed the first play of his: Veracruz. Mexico was the inspiration for several plays: Terra Incognita, produced by the Avignon Festival in 1992 and Lumières, created with Jean-Christoph Bailly, Michel Deutsch and choreographer Jean-François Duroure. In 1996, appointed as director of the Odeon – Theatre of Europe, he continued to explore the multiple facets of his arts: the classics — Brecht, Shakespeare, Büchner, Chekhov, Feydeau — in alternation with contemporary creations.
Recently, he directed Roberto Zucco by Koltès, The Night of the Iguana by Tennessee Williams, The Misanthrope by Molière, Ajax in collaboration with Matteo Bavera, A Tempest based on The Tempest and A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth Horror Suite by Carmelo Bene and Fado Alexandrino by Lobo Antunes, in collaboration with Nicolas Bigards. For the opera, he staged The Cherry Orchard by Philippe Fénelon at the National Opera in Paris.
