The Miser is one of Moliere’s best known plays. It was first produced in 1668 by his theatre troupe during the reign of King Louis XIV. Today it is one of the central comedies in dramatic literature and one of the most widely produced plays.

After Harpagon becomes widowed, he tries to marry off his daughter Èlise to a wealthy old man who agrees to take her without a dowry. Harpagon wishes to marry a young and impoverished Mariane, whom his son Cléante also wants to

marry. In several situations that are comic and pitiful, his children try to prevent both marriages. Meanwhile, Harpagon tries to save his most precious possessions which he hides in a box from his children and servants.

Full of conflicts and tension between love and money, the story reveals how Harpagon’s miserliness causes him to lose both his children and his

money.
