From 8 to 10 April 2016, the UTE member representatives met in Bochum to attend the General Assembly of the UTE.
Held twice a year, UTE General Assemblies bring together all the UTE members’ representatives, in order to discuss and vote on major decisions regarding the future of the community. UTE members reflect on today’s most relevant topics, the role of the theatre and the UTE in this context; they discuss the UTE programme, suggest activities, projects, and vote on important administrative and legal questions.
In spring 2016, the General Assembly took place at the Schauspielhaus Bochum. The Schauspielhaus Bochum, represented by its artistic director Anselm Weber, has been a member of the UTE since 2013.
Bochum is a city in the northwest of Germany in the centre of the post-industrial area of the Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr region), also called Revier or Ruhrpott in the common speech. With a population density of 2,800/km² and a population of eight and a half million, the Ruhrgebiet is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany. It is considered part of the larger Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region of more than 12 million people, which is among the largest in Europe. In 2010, the Ruhr region was one of the European Capitals of Culture.
With large former industrial sites in the area, amongst them UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Ruhrgebiet is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage and annually hosts the “Ruhrfestspiele” and the “Ruhrtriennale” two of the most relevant international festivals for music, art and theatre in Germany. The Schauspielhaus Bochum belongs to the most famous theatres in this rich cultural area and is one of the most important theatres in the German theatre sector altogether.
The Schauspielhaus Bochum, as host of the UTE General Assembly, prepared a programme of artistic activities dealing with the phenomenon of xenophobia Das Eigene & das Fremde (The Own & the Foreign):
The premiere of Die Schutzbefohlenen / Appendix / Coda / Epilog auf dem Boden by Elfriede Jelinek, directed by Hermann Schmidt-Rahmer, as well as three performances of the repertoire of the Schauspielhaus, Hiob directed by Lisa Nielebock, Stiller directed by Eric de Vroedt, future artistic director of the National Theatre The Hague and familiar to the UTE in his function as director of the UTE masterclass “The European of the Year” in the summer of 2015; and finally, the performance Lampedusa by Anders Lustgarten, directed by Olaf Kröck, chief dramaturg of the Schauspielhaus.
Dramaturg and writer Koen Tachelet gave an introduction to Joseph Roth’s novel Hiob before the show, all performances were surtitled in English, discussions with artists and academic specialists and performances of the repertoire of the Schauspielhaus completed the frame programme of the General Assembly and invited the international guests as well as the local audience to attend this international event.
