European Youth debates at the European Commission – New Narrative for Europe

The European Commission invited Young Europeans to share their wishes, thoughts and doubts about a common vision of the European Union on 9 February 2016 in Brussels.

New Narrative for Europe is the project entitled to encourage citizens and put a European Youth in the centre of the debate about how to make Europe a better place. Twenty-two trainees of the “DG Education and Culture programme” of the European Commission opened the discussion by the visualization of their wishes for the future of the European Union in an animated short film The Europe thing: A Europe devoted to peace building, a common education framework, less bureaucracy and more communication among their institutions, investment in innovative and ecological mobility, a European agency that is entitled to investigate crimes that the EU challenges, education and employment opportunities, obligatory language classes for refugees and an agenda to support youth employment were among their key points.

Representatives of various youth organisations joined the debate for example the ESN (International Erasmus Students Network), the AEGEE European students forum, the EUJS (European Union of Jewish Students) or ENIL Youth network (European network on Independent Living), outpointing the relevance of the words “difference” and “common values” to the discussion.

The question was raised about how to differentiate between ideas and ideals – a wish to encourage people to open all topics for debate, to become committed to their European citizenship, to create an engaging Europe that supports critical minds and reflection.
